The post-socialist beachfront development in Bulgaria
aimed to revitalize the struggling national economy and
showcase a transformed Bulgaria by creating new tourism
areas. However, as the beachfront became increasingly
urbanized, it rapidly transitioned from symbolizing a
prosperous post-socialist lifestyle to becoming a
reflection of the shortcomings and failures of present-
day Bulgarian politics. During recent years’ calm off-seasons,
most hotels cease their operations, while their architectural
remnants stand as silent embodiments of the contrasting
story of Bulgarian beach tourism.
